Rubio noted that Samarkand has been an important center of international trade relations for several centuries. Today, this region is hosting dialogues aimed at expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva noted that the Secretary of State's first visit to Uzbekistan taking place precisely in Samarkand carries special symbolic meaning.

Earlier, it was reported that Rubio was visiting Uzbekistan with a delegation consisting of more than one hundred representatives of American companies.

The visit program in Samarkand also includes a meeting in the C5+1 format — the heads of foreign policy agencies of the five Central Asian states and the US. Negotiations with the leadership of Uzbekistan and representatives of the region's countries are also planned.

The main topics of the meetings are economic cooperation, trade, private investment, energy security, and the development of regional connectivity.

Samarkand also holds a special place in the history of the C5+1 format: this dialogue platform was launched in this very city in November 2015. It brings together Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the US.
