“Needed for the office” – Head of Jomboy district ecology department jailed for accepting an all-in-one computer as a bribe

A person who worked as the head of the Jomboy district Ecology and Environmental Protection Department has been held criminally liable.

According to the court verdict, 39-year-old J.R. demanded a computer set (all-in-one computer) worth 11 million soums in exchange for not taking measures regarding the illegal felling of nearly 100 poplar trees in the Zarafshon neighborhood of the district, reducing the calculated damage caused to nature, and releasing a vehicle from the impound lot.

He was caught during an operational event on June 26 in his office while receiving the all-in-one computer as a bribe.

In court, J.R. pleaded guilty and stated that he asked for the computer set because his office needed it.

“On June 24, 2024, while returning from my place of residence, I saw several unknown individuals cutting down poplars on Gallakapa Street in Jomboy district. I went up to them and took the documents from the owner of the truck. I placed the truck in the impound lot and drew up a report regarding the tree felling.

On June 25, a resident of Jomboy district came to me, saying that the people who cut the trees were his acquaintances, and offered $300, asking me to release the truck from the impound lot. I told him that I did not need money, but that he should buy a computer because my office needed one, and that after that I would help release the truck from the impound lot. However, I did not say I would reduce the fine,” the defendant said in his testimony.

By the verdict of the Jomboy District Criminal Court, J.R. was found guilty of committing the crime provided for in Part 1 of Article 210 (Bribery) of the Criminal Code. He was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment, with deprivation of the right to hold official and financially accountable positions in organizations with state participation for a period of 2 years.
