Muller, Hummels and Jan Sommer buy Portuguese club

A group of investors, including world champions Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, as well as Swiss goalkeeper Jan Sommer, have bought a 90% stake in Portuguese football club Estrela da Amadora for €40 million. CNN Portugal reports that the deal is the most expensive club share purchase in Portuguese football history.

Interestingly, the club's previous owner, Paulo Lopu, bought the club for just €72,000 in July 2020, when the team was still playing in the third division. By the 2023/24 season, the team was able to return to the top division, Primeira Liga.

Under the new deal, Paulo Lopu, who has been president until now, will step down, but his son, Francisco Lopu, will remain as CEO. It should also be noted that the team is currently experiencing financial difficulties. In particular, in May 2026, “Estrella” applied to the court with a request to ease the terms of payment of its debt of more than 25 million euros.

Let us recall that the new owners of the team have achieved great success in the world of football. Thomas Muller is a 13-time German champion and a two-time winner of the Champions League, as well as the 2014 World Cup champion. His former teammate Mats Hummels also won the same World Cup and became the Bundesliga champion five times during his career. In turn, the goalkeeper of the Swiss national team Jan Sommer also managed to win the German and Italian championships in his time.
