Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly looking to invest in professional sports. The Guardian reports that the businessman, along with other investors, is considering buying at least a 30 percent stake in the famous English football club Liverpool. The deal could be worth up to £1.35 billion, or about $1.8 billion.
Liverpool is currently valued at around $6 billion and is one of the most recognizable sports brands in the world. Bezos' interest in the club fits into a broader trend: wealthy American investors are actively buying stakes in English football clubs. Currently, 13 of the 20 Premier League teams are owned by American shareholders, including Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and Bournemouth.
If the deal goes through, Bezos would join a growing number of American billionaires who are actively investing in English football.
English football’s appeal to investors is partly due to the sport’s growing popularity in the United States. At the same time, leading American sports franchises are often too expensive or too limited for new investors, while a stake in an English club offers access to a global audience and one of the most commercially attractive sports markets.
