According to Deutsche Welle, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has dismissed the country's defense minister No Gwang-chol and appointed Kim Son-gi, former head of the General Political Department of the Korean People's Army, in his place. According to reports, a meeting chaired by Kim Jong-un approved a plan to structurally reorganize the country's military leadership. Other personnel changes were also made in the DPRK military leadership.
The dismissed defense minister was not only removed from his post, but was also demoted to the rank of deputy head of the Military Industry Department in the Workers' Party hierarchy.
The reasons for the personnel changes were not disclosed. These changes occurred at a time when the modernization of the North Korean Armed Forces is underway.
According to South Korean data, just a week ago, the DPRK launched at least 10 short-range ballistic missiles.
US President Donald Trump previously said that he intends to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un by the end of this year and resume talks on Pyongyang's nuclear program.
According to Trump, the DPRK leader currently has 57 very powerful nuclear warheads at his disposal. Trump also ordered a significant reduction in the scale of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.
In addition, Trump demanded compensation from South Korea for its defense. The White House leader said during a press conference that it was about $ 10 billion. In response, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called for the return of independent control over the country's military, free from US influence.
