Kazakhstan plans to complete the construction of a new railway leading to Uzbekistan by the end of the year
In Kazakhstan, construction work on the 127.6-kilometer-long Darbaza — Maqtaaral railway line is nearing completion. According to the country's Ministry of Transport, operational traffic is planned to be launched by the end of 2026.
This new section will serve to create an additional route for Kazakhstan with Uzbekistan, reduce the load on the congested Saryagash — Tashkent section, and expand the potential of transit transport in the region.
The construction of the Darbaza — Maqtaaral line began at the end of November 2023.
The project cost is estimated at 545 million dollars. Within its framework, it is planned to open a new crossing point on the border of the two states, leading to the "Syrdarya" railway station.
In April, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Serik Zhumangarin, stated that excessive congestion in transport corridors, including the Saryagash — Tashkent route, was hindering the growth of trade volume between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
According to his estimates, the new railway section will have the capacity to transport up to 20 million tons of cargo.
