It has been revealed which cars lose their value the fastest

Cars lose varying portions of their initial value over five years. According to a new study, while the Porsche 718 Cayman was the model that retained its value best, the Nissan LEAF was recorded as the car that depreciates the most over five years. Electric vehicles, meanwhile, made up the majority among the cars losing their value the fastest.

Which cars lose their value the fastest has been determined

The automotive research agency iSeeCars analyzed how much value cars will lose over five years in 2026.

The rating was compiled based on data from more than 950,000 used cars that were five years old, sold between March 2025 and February 2026. All prices were recalculated in accordance with the dollar value in 2026.

In the study, the average price of each model in the secondary market was compared with the manufacturer's original suggested retail price — MSRP. The less the car depreciated, the greater the share of its original value it is considered to have retained after five years.

Porsche 718 Cayman lost the least value

According to the results of the study, the best performance was recorded in the Porsche 718 Cayman model. It loses only 9.6 percent of its original value in five years.

In monetary terms, this means the car depreciates by an average of $6,988. The model's original suggested retail price was approximately $72.8 thousand.

Second place was taken by the Porsche 911 — it loses 11.1 percent of its value in five years. In third place is the Chevrolet Corvette, whose price decreases by 18.7 percent over the same period.

In general, sports cars showed high results among the models that retain their price best. Four of the top seven positions in the rating were occupied by sports cars — Porsche 718 Cayman, Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette, and Subaru BRZ.

This shows that some sports and enthusiast-oriented models, despite having a relatively high initial price, retain their value in the secondary market better than average cars.

Toyota models are also in high positions

Toyota models also occupy a significant place in the rating of cars that retain their price well.

In particular, the Toyota Tacoma took fourth place in the rating, losing 19.9 percent of its original value in five years. The Toyota Tundra was recorded in fifth place with a depreciation of 21.2 percent.

In general, seven Toyota models were included in the list of cars that retain their value best. Among them are pickups, SUVs, compact cars, and minivans. This shows that high residual value is characteristic not of just one Toyota model or car type, but of its vehicles in various segments.
