**Most expensive American car sells for $42.9 million, setting a record**

A 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe has sold for $42.9 million, setting a new record for an American car, according to Gooding & Christie’s.

The model, which had a starting price of more than $25 million, nearly doubled its estimate. The previous record was held by a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ that sold for $22 million in 2018.

The Shelby Cobra Daytona was designed to compete with the Ferrari 250 GTO and compete in races. Based on the British AC Ace roadster, it featured a V8 engine and a new aerodynamic body.

Only six Daytona Coupes were built, and this particular one competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Nürburgring.
