Is the Amu Darya drying up? The Ministry of Water Resources explained what is happening to the river

The Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan commented on reports circulating on social networks about the alleged drying up of the Amu Darya. The department emphasized that the flow of the river continues, and the decrease in water levels in autumn is a natural seasonal process.

According to the ministry as of October 9, the water level at the hydrological post in Termez was 239 centimeters. This is 27 centimeters higher than during the same period last year. At the same time, at the Kerki hydropost, the water discharge reached 499 cubic meters per second, which is 63 cubic meters less than a year earlier.

The department also provided data on the Nurek Reservoir in Tajikistan, which is located on the Vakhsh River — one of the main tributaries of the Amu Darya. Currently, 408 cubic meters of water per second flows into it, while 320 cubic meters are released. The total volume of water in the reservoir is 10.54 billion cubic meters.

Specialists explained that in September and October, a decrease in the water level and discharge in rivers is considered a normal hydrological phenomenon. After the end of the irrigation season, reservoirs begin to accumulate reserves for the next year. According to the ministry's assessment, the current figures do not indicate a cessation of the flow of the Amu Darya.
