Uzbekistan proposes introducing labeling for drinks based on sugar levels

In Uzbekistan, starting January 1, 2027, there are plans to introduce warning labels for non-alcoholic beverages with high sugar content. Such a draft project has been prepared by the Ministry of Health.

The size of the label will be determined by the amount of sugar per 100 ml of the drink. If its content is between 5 and 8 grams, the inscription "Medium sugar content" will appear on the packaging, and with a figure of 8 to 11 grams — "High sugar content".

For drinks with 11 grams of sugar or more, it is proposed to use the inscription: "Very high sugar content — frequent consumption is harmful to health."

The warning will be placed on the front side of the packaging. It must occupy at least 15% of the area and be clearly visible. In addition, there are plans to apply a QR code with data on the composition, calorie content, and daily intake norm.

It is proposed to approve a unified methodology for laboratory analysis of drinks by March 1, 2027. By September 1, it is planned to organize the determination of sugar content in accredited laboratories.

The Ministry of Health also proposes to create and publish quarterly a registry of drinks with high sugar content.
