In Uzbekistan, pregnant women have been allowed to choose a cesarean section even without medical grounds

New rules for performing cesarean sections have been approved in Uzbekistan. Now, medical indications for this surgery are officially established, and pregnant women, in the absence of such indications, will be able to make their own decision regarding the operation.

The list of medical indications for a cesarean section during childbirth has been registered by the Ministry of Justice. The new regulations will apply to both public and private medical organizations providing maternity services.

In total, the list includes 31 medical indications for a cesarean section. Depending on the situation, the operations are categorized into emergency, urgent, and planned.

Separately, the document establishes the right of a pregnant woman to choose. If there are no indications, a woman has the right to choose a cesarean section herself. Before the intervention, she must be warned about the potential consequences, and her voluntary consent must be obtained.

Previously, the United Nations Population Fund reported that a significant proportion of women in Eastern Europe and Central Asia had experienced abusive treatment during childbirth.
