Democrats in the US gain control of both houses of Congress
In the US elections, Democrats, who gained control of the Senate, also showed good results in the House of Representatives. They took 224 seats. The Guardian wrote about this.
According to the election results, at least 51 of the 100 seats in the Senate belong to the Democrats. In the House of Representatives, they won 224 seats. This is more than the 218 seats (50 percent + 1) needed to form a majority in this chamber. For comparison, Republicans currently hold 39 seats in the Senate and 133 in the House of Representatives.
More than 100 Democratic women were elected to the House of Representatives, which means their representation has increased by 60 percent since 2016.
“Women suffered the most from the reckless actions of the Trump administration and the extremist agenda of the Republicans. On Tuesday (November 3, the day the midterms took place in the US), they clearly demonstrated that their patience had run out,” said Senator Teresa Leger Fernandez, chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus, in a statement.
A Muslim individual is expected to become the first US senator
Abdul El-Sayed announced on the morning of November 4 that he won the US Senate election from the state of Michigan. He will be the first Muslim senator to serve in the upper chamber of Congress. However, the Associated Press agency has not yet officially declared the election results. Currently, 79 percent of the votes have been counted, and El-Sayed is 5 points ahead of his Republican opponent Mike Rogers.
“You welcomed me into your homes, your churches, your synagogues,” El-Sayed told supporters at the Democratic Party headquarters in Detroit.
He recalled that his Republican opponents, instead of addressing the price of gas and food in the US, preferred to point to his name and faith, saying he was “a little different.”
“They want an America that is too small for some of us. But we know that America is big enough for all of us,” El-Sayed said.
Trump's reaction
Republican US President Donald Trump said he plans to veto Democratic Party legislation following the midterm election results.
“I don't view it (the Republican loss) as a loss for myself because I was not on the ballot,” he said.
Trump expressed hope that he could cooperate with Democrats on immigration. Furthermore, when asked if he accepts the election results, he replied, “Yes, of course, I accept them.”
