Democrats gain control of the Senate in the US
In the US, Democrats have gained control of the Senate. They achieved a historic result by defeating Republicans in elections held across the country.
Democrats are also expected to win the elections for the House of Representatives. If so, they will control both chambers of Congress starting in 2027. This is expected to happen for the first time since 2022.
Democrats gained control of the Senate thanks to victories by their candidates in the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Iowa, and Kansas. Now, at least 51 of the 100 seats belong to the Democrats.
In Texas, Democratic Party candidate James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump. Thus, for the first time since 1988, a Democrat was elected to the Senate from the state of Texas.
In Ohio, Democratic former Senator Sherrod Brown defeated incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted. In North Carolina, former state Governor Roy Cooper won over Michael Whatley. The shift of control of the Senate to the Democrats significantly changes the balance of political power in Washington. Now they can block the president's nominees, including for federal judgeships, and strengthen parliamentary oversight of the Trump administration's activities.
