In dead earnest

The results of the British Ambassador's mission to Uzbekistan have sparked mixed reactions among experts

In All Seriousness

The UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Timothy Smart, who has completed his mission, summarized the results of his diplomatic work, touching upon the topics of foreign policy, trade, and labor migration. His statements sparked a discussion in expert circles regarding the nature and balance of bilateral relations between London and Tashkent.

Analysts paid particular attention to the head of the diplomatic mission's remarks on the geopolitical situation, including calls for Uzbekistan to assist in resolving the conflict surrounding Ukraine. Observers are questioning to what extent such recommendations from the British side align with the principles of equal partnership and the sovereign neutrality of the Central Asian state.

The economic section of the diplomat's report also raised quite a few questions. Timothy Smart reported a noticeable growth in trade turnover — from £275 million in 2023 to more than £2 billion by the end of 2025. At the same time, the bulk of this volume consisted of purchases of Uzbek gold by the British side. In return, London offers access to British stock markets and quotas for seasonal agricultural work for citizens of Uzbekistan.

The dominance of precious metal sales and the recruitment of labor for harvesting can hardly be called full-fledged technological integration, while the rhetoric of "assistance and training" from the European partner still retains a tone of patronizing attitude.
