Heavy rains and landslides kill 19 in the Philippines

Torrential rains and landslides in the Philippines have killed 19 people.

In the Philippines, floods and landslides triggered by intense monsoon rains and tropical cyclones have killed at least 19 people, with four more missing. More than 2.2 million people in the country have been affected by the disaster.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, approximately 95,000 people are being housed in 919 evacuation centers. At least 684 homes have been damaged, 45 of which have been completely destroyed.

The most critical situation is on the island of Luzon. In the city of Baguio, a landslide destroyed several residential buildings, killing four people and leaving six others missing. Rescue services continue search operations despite persistent rainfall. The storm also paralyzed transportation and infrastructure. The Coast Guard temporarily closed 20 ports, while authorities in Manila and several provinces switched to remote work and modified school learning.

According to preliminary government estimates, damage to infrastructure totaled $23 million, while agricultural damage totaled $7.9 million. Forecasters predict continued heavy rainfall.

Earlier, a typhoon struck China's east coast, leading to mass evacuations and transportation disruptions. More than a million people were evacuated from hazardous areas, and Shanghai received over 300 millimeters of rainfall in one day—a record high in over 150 years of records.
