Harry Kane awarded the Ballon d'Or
England national team and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has become the winner of the Ballon d'Or, the best player of the season award presented by France Football magazine.
Kane scored 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern in the 2025/2026 season, winning the German championship and cup with his team. He was also the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 36 goals, taking the Golden Boot. In addition, he won the bronze medal with the England national team, taking third place at the 2026 World Cup.
According to the voting results, Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé took second place, while Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal took third place.
Accepting the award, Kane expressed his gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, fans, as well as his former club Tottenham, where he played before transferring to Bayern in 2023.
"Anything is possible. My path has not been easy. I wasn't a kid who immediately reached the top. I had to overcome difficulties, go through many loan spells, and fight to reach the level I am at today. I hope my story can inspire you too," the footballer said.
Prior to moving to Bayern, despite displaying high productivity, Kane had not won major team trophies. He achieved his first such title in May 2025, when the Munich side became German champions.
This victory by Kane became the fifth in the history of English football in terms of the number of players who have won the Ballon d'Or. Before this, the award was received by Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979), and Michael Owen (2001).
The best female footballer of 2026 was recognized as 32-year-old Spaniard Alexia Putellas, who transferred from Barcelona to England's London City Lionesses in the summer.
She has won this award for the third time in her career — Putellas was previously the winner in 2021 and 2022. In terms of the number of women's Ballons d'Or, the Spanish player drew level with her former teammate Aitana Bonmatí, who won the award for three consecutive years from 2023 to 2025.
In the 2025/26 season, Putellas helped Barcelona win the Spanish championship and cup, as well as the country's Super Cup.
According to the voting results, Barcelona's Polish striker Ewa Pajor took second place, and Manchester City and Jamaica national team player Khadija Shaw took third place.
