Even responsible for malfunctions: Hyundai and Anduril test an autonomous vessel

HD Hyundai and Anduril tested the autonomous control systems of a 368-ton vessel off the coast of California. During the three-and-a-half-hour demonstration, the vessel demonstrated its ability to independently respond to task changes and artificially created equipment malfunctions.

A vessel previously used by the US Navy, which was later adapted for uncrewed operation, was selected for the test.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering — HD KSOE — equipped it with the VAone autonomous control system. Anduril provided its Lattice platform, designed to perform tasks independently.

The combined operation of the two systems demonstrated the vessel's ability to navigate considering the maritime situation and adapt its actions when mission parameters change.

During the trials, formation sailing and emergency situations simulating equipment failure were practiced. Experts evaluated how the vessel responds to technical glitches and potential damage, and its ability to maintain control over mission execution under such conditions.

Operators and observers monitored the process remotely from a shore-based control center. A live video feed allowed them to view the vessel's movements and assess its operation without constant human intervention.

The demonstrated technologies could be used in future US Navy operations. The test aims to strengthen HD Hyundai and Anduril's prospects for participating in uncrewed surface vessel programs in the US.

The companies also plan to expand their presence in the international market amid growing demand for such maritime platforms.
