“My grandmother will never see again...”

“My grandmother, who is approaching 80, had blurry vision in her left eye. When we brought her to the hospital in the regional center, specialists assessed her condition and said an artificial lens needed to be implanted in her eye. The lens was implanted surgically. A day after the surgery, my grandmother's condition began to deteriorate. Rashes appeared on her eye, swelling formed, and pus kept flowing. We called the surgeon, Oybek Akbaraliyevich, and informed him about the situation. He said the patient needed to be brought to the hospital immediately. We brought my grandmother, who was already in agony, back to the center.

Upon arriving at the hospital, we learned that the same thing had happened to 14 other patients who underwent surgery alongside my grandmother on September 9-10.

My grandmother stayed at the hospital that day. As her condition continued to worsen, we went to see the surgeon, Oybek Akbaraliyevich. He told us there was no need to panic, that the swelling and pus in the eye were due to an infection, and that the eye would start seeing again in about 10 days.

On September 14, the chief physician of the microsurgery department, Abdurazzoq Shermatov, announced that the operated patients needed to be taken to Tashkent immediately. Early in the morning on September 15, 14 patients were taken to Tashkent.

Doctors at the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Eye Microsurgery in the Uchtepa district reportedly said that if the infected eye was not removed within half an hour, the pus could spread to the brain, and all patients could die. That afternoon, my father called from the capital and said that my grandmother's operated eye had been completely removed. Hearing the news made our skin crawl.

Because of the surgery, 9 patients lost their eyes, and the remaining 6 patients will probably lose theirs too. Most tragically, all 15 patients entered the surgery with open eyes. Now they have become blind.

The 9 people whose eyes were removed do not yet know that they will not be able to see in the future. Because we are lying to them, saying that due to the surgery, their eyes temporarily cannot see, and they will see again in a week. Many of the patients have diabetes and high blood pressure.

The eyes of the patients who lost them were operated on by 3 doctors. We demand that strict measures be taken against them,” says Jaloliddin Mahmudov, whose grandmother lost one eye.

Another applicant, Isroil Parpiyev, reported that an artificial lens was implanted in the eye of his father, who is approaching 70, and after the surgical procedure, an infection was contracted, and his father lost both eyes.

“We were forced to remove the eyes”

“It is true that on September 9-10, surgical procedures were performed on 15 patients diagnosed with cataracts at the Fergana branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Eye Microsurgery. Following the surgery, inflammatory complications were observed in the patients, and 12 of them were transferred to the Republican Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Eye Microsurgery.

There, necessary medical assistance was provided, and a vitrectomy procedure was performed. As a result, the eye organs of four patients were saved. However, unfortunately, in nine patients, the eye area was removed to prevent complications. Currently, the general condition of the patients has stabilized.

The surgeries were performed by three doctors. Prostheses were installed in place of the removed eyes, restoring them cosmetically.

Some of the patients whose condition improved have been discharged home and are under supervision. There are also patients continuing their treatment at the Fergana branch.

The patients had approached our center with complaints of clouding of the eye lens (cataracts). Based on their condition, appropriate surgical procedures were performed.

In accordance with Order No. 402 of the Ministry of Health dated September 22, 2026, a special group of specialists visited our center. Currently, an investigation into the situation is underway. The causes of the infection and final conclusions on the situation will be presented after the investigation is completed,” said Shukurullo Asqarov, Deputy Director for Clinical Work at the Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Eye Microsurgery.
