Uzbekistan wants to make cricket a magnet for foreign tourists

The Tourism Committee of Uzbekistan plans to use cricket to attract foreign tourists. To this end, the Project Office for Tourism Products Development under the committee and the Cricket Federation of Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of cooperation.

The parties intend to hold the international Uzbekistan International Cricket & Tourism Cup tournament and the Silk Road Cricket Festival annually, combining sports competitions with tourism programs.

Cricket is particularly popular in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Hosting international competitions is expected to help attract athletes and fans from these countries to Uzbekistan.

Special tourist routes visiting Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and other historical cities are planned to be developed for them. The organizers also plan to involve tour operators, hotels, airline and railway companies, artisans, and entertainment complexes in the project.

Thus, the authorities expect to combine sports events with cultural tourism and expand Uzbekistan's presence in the international tourism market.
