This was reported by the "Dunyo" information agency with reference to the World Nuclear News portal

According to "Rosatom", two large power units with VVER-1000 reactors will be located next to the small modular reactors. Engineering survey work is currently being carried out at the site, and the project is being refined.

Construction of small reactors continues

The report notes that the construction of two small modular reactors is underway at the site of the future NPP. In May 2026, the first concrete slab of the foundation was poured. The work associated with it is planned to be completed by the end of the year.

At the same time, equipment requiring a long manufacturing lead time is being produced. The reactor pressure vessel for one of the small power units is already ready. Recruitment of operational personnel for the first small unit is scheduled to begin in late 2027.

Head of "Rosatom" Alexey Likhachev emphasized that this project is currently the only small nuclear power plant in the world being implemented under an export model.

Local companies to be involved in construction

Currently, more than a thousand people are working at the construction site. It is planned to at least double the number of personnel in the coming months. It is expected that a significant portion of the general construction work will be assigned to Uzbekistan companies.

The first phase of the "nuclear town" planned to be built near the station will be designed for 33 thousand residents. It envisages the construction of energy-efficient housing, educational, medical, and sports facilities.

According to the portal, during the meeting of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev with the head of "Rosatom", issues of training qualified personnel for nuclear energy as well as cooperation in housing construction were also discussed.
