Coal production in Uzbekistan has dropped by nearly 7%. Turkey's Cengiz Holding discusses new projects

Turkey's Cengiz Holding is studying opportunities to participate in geological exploration and development of coal deposits in the Surkhandarya and Tashkent regions of Uzbekistan. Negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of an almost 7% decline in the country's coal production.

The Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology hosted a meeting with Caner Karabay, Regional Director of Cengiz Holding in Uzbekistan and General Director of CENERGO LLC.

The parties reviewed prospects for the geological study of coal deposits, the preparation of promising sites for development, and opportunities to launch new investment projects.

Ministry representatives briefed potential investors on the industry's regulatory framework and project implementation conditions.

At this stage, discussions only concern potential cooperation. Information regarding the signing of an investment agreement, estimated investment volumes, and project timelines has not been published.

The interest in coal deposits has emerged amid falling production. According to official statistics, 5.4 million tons of coal were mined in Uzbekistan in January–September 2026, compared to 5.8 million tons during the same period last year. The decline amounted to 400 thousand tons, or 6.9%.

Whether the Turkish investor's interest will translate into actual investments in the coal sector remains to be seen.
