Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev approved five cooperation agreements with Turkmenistan covering the economy, energy, defense, food security, and customs cooperation, as reported by Media.az.
The approved documents include an agreement on the main areas of development and deepening of economic cooperation, a memorandum of understanding in the defense sector, and an agreement on cooperation in energy. Two documents concerning food security and cooperation between customs services on mutual trade statistics were also ratified.
These documents were signed on June 22 in Baku during Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's state visit to Azerbaijan. During the visit, the parties exchanged more than ten agreements, memoranda, and programs, and Aliyev and Berdimuhamedov signed a joint statement.
The expanded package of documents included an industrial cooperation program for 2026–2028 and a program for interaction between the foreign ministries for 2026–2029, as well as agreements in agriculture, healthcare, sports, labor and social protection, and finance.
During the talks in Baku, Berdimuhamedov also expressed Turkmenistan's readiness to develop cooperation with Azerbaijan in the electric power, oil and gas industries, and transport and transit. Specifically, the possibility of supplying Turkmen electricity to Azerbaijan and developing the Afghanistan–Turkmenistan–Azerbaijan–Georgia–Turkey and Turkmenistan–Azerbaijan–Georgia–Romania routes were discussed.
In recent years, relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have noticeably intensified. Energy remains a key area of cooperation: the parties are discussing the supply of Turkmen energy resources via the Caspian Sea and the development of transport routes to the South Caucasus and Turkey.
Relations between the two countries were previously complicated by a dispute over oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea. In 2021, Baku and Ashgabat agreed to jointly develop a field named "Dostlug" (Friendship), symbolizing the normalization of relations. In June 2026, Aliyev presented Berdimuhamedov with the tanker "Dostlug."
