Boat capsizes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing 41 people

At least 41 people have lost their lives after a boat capsized in Lake Tanganyika near the coast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to Norris Mulongoyi, the Minister of Transport for Tanganyika Province, the boat was sailing from Tanzania towards the DRC. There were nearly 100 people and cargo on board.

Officials stated that they managed to rescue 49 passengers. The search for the remaining individuals is ongoing.

The reason why the boat capsized has not yet been determined. According to the AP, hundreds of people have died in boat-related tragedies in the DRC in recent years. Such vessels are often overloaded and lack a sufficient number of life jackets.

In the DRC, boats are considered one of the cheapest and most affordable means of transport for the majority of the population. The country is one of the poorest in the world, where the necessary transport infrastructure is not sufficiently developed for a population of over 100 million.
