A Damascus court has sentenced Wassim al-Assad, the cousin of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to death, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA.

Wassim al-Assad was found guilty of premeditated murder and torture, which were classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Furthermore, the court ordered the confiscation of all his movable and immovable property to the state treasury.

The trial took place in the Fourth Criminal Court of Damascus as part of the transitional justice process. Syrian authorities detained Wassim al-Assad in June 2025 on the border with Lebanon.

Earlier, on August 11, a Damascus court sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his younger brother Maher al-Assad, who previously led the fourth division of the Syrian army, to death in absentia.
