Along with Bashar al-Assad, 66-year-old Atif Najib, a former high-ranking Syrian official and the former president's cousin, was sentenced to death, according to the agency.
Bashar al-Assad, a native of Damascus, has led Syria since 2000, taking over from his father, Hafez al-Assad.
Assad was overthrown in December 2024 and granted asylum in Russia. The country is currently under transitional leadership by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
In September 2025, the SANA news agency reported that a Syrian court had issued an arrest warrant in absentia for former President Bashar al-Assad.
