Azerbaijan banned flights for Iranian aircraft
The Azerbaijani government has imposed restrictions on flights of Iranian airlines to the country's territory.
This measure is attributed to the sanctions imposed by Washington against Tehran. Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that airports and companies serving Iranian aviation would face restrictions, as well as be disconnected from the dollar-based settlement system.
"Azerbaijan Airlines" announced that flights of Iranian airlines to the republic would be suspended starting September 22, noting that this decision is linked to the new US sanctions package. Meanwhile, Scott Bessent, in an interview with CNBC, stated that starting September 23, Iranian airlines would not be able to operate international flights.
"Starting September 23, all Iranian airlines will cease their operations worldwide. How will we achieve this? If they land (at your airport), you cannot refuel them, you cannot provide them with landing services, you cannot sell tickets, otherwise you will be excluded from the dollar system," Bessent said.
At the end of August, the US launched a new large-scale sanctions campaign against Iran called "Economic Outlawry". American officials stated that this aims to completely sever Iran's economic ties with the outside world. Bessent stated that "any organization that helps launder money in the interests of Iran" would face restrictions.
On September 8, the US Department of the Treasury announced that 27 Iranian airlines had fallen under sanctions as part of the "Economic Outlawry" operation. Previously, Georgia had suspended air service with Iran. The Prime Minister of the Republic, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that such a decision was made due to the sanctions.
In addition, all flights of Turkish airlines to Iran have been canceled until March 2027. Turkey has also banned flights of Iran's Mahan Air to the country.
Earlier, it was reported that an Iranian plane's wheel detached immediately after takeoff. Problems arose in the engine, and a strong shaking occurred in the aircraft cabin. Due to the incident, the plane was returned to the airport and successfully landed in Mashhad.
