At least 15 newborn babies killed in hospital fire in Pakistan (video)

At least 15 newborn babies died in a fire that broke out in the children's ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on August 26, Al Jazeera reported, citing local media.

According to the hospital administration, there were a total of 16 babies in the children's ward at the time of the tragedy. Only one of them was rescued.

The fire was caused by an explosion in the air conditioning compressor in the ward. The fire has now been completely extinguished, and firefighters are working to cool the scene.

According to Islamabad Chief Commissioner Sohail Ashraf, an emergency call about the fire was received shortly before 7:00 am local time.
