At least 14 people killed in weapons depot explosion in Syria (video)

On September 9, a powerful explosion occurred at a weapons depot located near the city of Sarmada in the Idlib province of northwestern Syria. As a result, at least 14 people lost their lives, and another 11 were injured. Deutsche Welle reported this, citing the country's officials.

According to reports, the explosion took place at a temporary storage facility for weapons and remnants of war. The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that the military equipment was scheduled to be relocated to another site. The injured include employees of the facility.

Due to the large amount of explosive materials in the area, secondary explosions and fires broke out. This complicated the work of rescuers. Black smoke continued to rise from the blast site for a long time. The Idlib province health department confirmed the preliminary figures regarding the number of casualties. So far, officials have not disclosed the exact cause of the explosion.

This is the second tragedy to occur in Idlib in September. On September 1, a vehicle loaded with ammunition exploded in the city of Binnish. At that time, five people were killed and several others were injured. Additionally, in July, 35 people were killed in a collision between two buses in the country.

Syria has only recently emerged from a multi-year civil war. The forces of the new president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, overthrew Bashar al-Assad from power and took control of Damascus. Idlib was one of the areas that suffered the most damage during the war.
