Armenia and Azerbaijan may withdraw their mutual lawsuits in international courts
As part of the conclusion of a peace agreement, Armenia and Azerbaijan are expected to withdraw their lawsuits filed against each other in international courts. This was announced by the head of the staff of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Lilit Makunts, TASS reported.
According to Makunts, if the two sides sign a final peace treaty, a decision will be made to cancel the mutual claims. At the same time, Yerevan stated that it will never stop protecting its interests in the international arena.
The dispute between the two countries began in September 2021. At that time, Armenia and Azerbaijan appealed to the UN International Court of Justice, accusing each other of violating the international convention against racial discrimination. Later, the consideration of the case was temporarily suspended because both sides contested the court's jurisdiction.
In November 2024, the UN court confirmed its jurisdiction over most of the claims. Also, in December 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his readiness to withdraw all lawsuits after the peace treaty is signed.
