"Aral-Gobi": Uzbekistan and Mongolia join forces in the fight against land degradation and desertification
Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan on Environmental Issues and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Aziz Abdukhakimov, held a meeting with the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia, S. Sandag-Ochir.
During the talks, the parties reviewed issues of expanding cooperation in the field of environmental protection, restoration of degraded lands, and adaptation to climate changes faced by both countries, including droughts, pasture degradation, and sand and dust storms.
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to jointly develop the "Aral-Gobi Partnership for the Restoration of Arid Land Ecosystems and Reduction of Sand and Dust Storms" initiative. In the first phase, it is planned to identify pilot areas in Uzbekistan and Mongolia, assess priority areas of work, and prepare specific project proposals to attract funds from the Green Climate Fund, the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and other international financial institutions. In addition, as a separate area of cooperation, the creation of a project preparation facility for land management in Central Asia and Mongolia (CA+M Land PPF) is envisaged, which will serve as a practical tool for developing investment-ready environmental initiatives.
