An AI platform for translating speech and text into sign language has been developed in Uzbekistan.

An innovative AI platform capable of translating speech and text into sign language and vice versa in real time has been created in Uzbekistan. This project aims to improve access to information, education, and digital services for people with hearing and speech impairments.
The platform, dubbed Surdo AI, was developed by the Information Technology Center under the National Agency for Social Protection, according to the Uzbekistan 24 television channel. Work on the project began last year, with the active participation of teachers and students from specialized schools, who made significant contributions to the sign language database.
Currently, the system includes over a thousand words with corresponding sign language translations. The app also features a topic-based learning module where users can master sign language and apply their acquired knowledge.
One of the key features of the project is its support for both Russian and Uzbek. According to Dilshoda Dadamukhamedova, an employee of the IT center, Surdo AI provides real-time translation of speech and text, which is expected to significantly expand the platform's capabilities in everyday communication.
The developers have also integrated Surdo AI with the Google Chrome web browser. A special plugin allows for the translation of webpage content directly while browsing, eliminating the need to switch to a separate app.
It is important to note that for people with hearing impairments, sign language is often a more familiar and understandable way to perceive information than written text. Therefore, such technologies have the potential to make digital content more accessible to hearing-impaired users.
Further improvements to the platform's functionality and browser extension are planned for the future. The developers hope that Surdo AI will help make news, educational materials, and other online content more accessible to people with hearing impairments.
