A world-class cell technology center will be established in Uzbekistan
A world-class cell technology center will be established at the Center for Advanced Technologies of the Academy of Sciences.
It is reported that the necessary scientific and technological foundation for the implementation of the Biome project has already been created. The first stem cell bank in Uzbekistan operates here, storing more than 1,200 samples. Cell products developed at the center are used in the treatment of burn injuries and tissue regeneration, maxillofacial surgery, and ophthalmology. Additionally, a drug based on NK-cells has been developed to combat oncological diseases, and preparations are underway for its clinical implementation.
In Seoul, in the presence of Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Korean President Lee Jae-myung, a memorandum was signed on the establishment of the new Biome (national genomics and biobank) center in Uzbekistan, which will elevate this project to a new level and open up broad opportunities for creating a modern, world-class infrastructure.
"Our goal is to turn Uzbekistan into one of the world centers of cell technologies and cell therapy, where advanced developments are created, produced, and applied in patient treatment," the Academy of Sciences said in a statement.
It is reported that another major area of the center's activity is the "1000 Genomes of Uzbekistan" project. Nearly 10 million genetic markers from more than 1,200 participants serve as the basis for creating a genetic map of the country's population. This is a unique national resource for studying hereditary characteristics, predicting disease risks, and developing personalized medicine.
Thus, the main directions of Biome — cell technologies, genomic research, and clinical medicine — have been united at the Academy of Sciences. The new center will allow the accumulated scientific potential and technologies to be developed on the basis of a single infrastructure, significantly expanding the scale of research and development.
Biome is a single technological platform that covers the entire process from the cell and scientific idea to the production of the finished cell product and its clinical application.
