As Naked Science reports, citing data from the South China Morning Post, the sharp surge in passenger flow is explained by the increased demand for holiday travel in connection with the founding day of the People's Republic of China.

Guangzhou South Railway Station, considered one of the country's largest railway hubs, served 1,252 trains in a single day. This means an average of more than 52 trains every hour within 24 hours.

During peak hours, the interval between train departures was reduced to as little as 40 seconds. This indicator applies to services across the entire station.

A record was also set on the Chinese railway network that day — 25.2 million passenger trips were made in a single day.

The state railway corporation China State Railway Group expected a total of 284 million passenger trips during the period from late September to early October. This figure represents the number of trips taken, not the number of individual people.
