A fire at an Islamabad hospital claimed the lives of 14 newborns.

In Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, a fire in the neonatal ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has killed 14 infants. One other baby was rescued.

The fire broke out this morning, August 26, on the third floor of the mother and child ward. According to preliminary reports, a short circuit or a faulty air conditioning system may have caused the incident. A special commission will determine the exact cause.

Six fire engines and four ambulances responded to the scene. Rescuers evacuated the building, and the fire was subsequently contained. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered an investigation to identify those responsible. A separate commission is expected to report within 24 hours.
