Mountaineer Nirmal Purja killed in Pakistan avalanche, his company says
The Nepali-born climber was known for scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in just over six months in 2019.
Nirmal Purja, the acclaimed mountaineer and former British Army soldier, has died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, according to an announcement from his company.
Elite Expeditions conveyed the tragic news via a social media post, expressing "profound sadness and immense heartbreak" in confirming Purja's death in the avalanche that occurred on Thursday. The company also stated that it had received confirmation that the remaining nine members of the expedition also perished.
The Nepal-born climber gained widespread recognition in 2019 for his remarkable achievement of summiting the world's 14 highest peaks in just over six months.
Previously, Pakistani officials had reported the recovery of three climbers' bodies from the 10-person expedition: American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal.
