Nirmal Purja among 10 climbers feared missing after avalanche
An American, a Chinese national, an Omani and five Nepalis are said to be part of the group feared missing in Pakistan.
A ten-person international climbing team, including the well-known Nepal-born former Royal Marine Nirmal Purja, is believed to be missing after an avalanche struck Pakistan's Broad Peak, one of the world's tallest mountains.
According to Pakistani mountaineering authorities, the avalanche occurred around midday on Thursday on the 8,047-meter peak within the Karakoram range. Communication with the team has ceased since the incident.
The climbing party reportedly includes an American, a Chinese national, an Omani, and five Nepalis.
Purja, who is leading the expedition, gained significant recognition in 2019 for ascending all 14 of the world's mountains exceeding 8,000 meters in just over six months.
Rescue efforts are hoping to deploy a helicopter, provided weather conditions allow.
