Zelensky imposed sanctions on his former press secretary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has imposed sanctions against his former press secretary, Iuliia Mendel. The corresponding decree was published on the president's website.

The decree notes that the former press secretary is spreading disinformation about Ukraine.

"In particular, sanctions were imposed against Iuliia Mendel," the report says.

Mendel commented on the situation on her Facebook page. According to her, the sanctions were imposed a few days before her speech in the European Parliament.

"Sanctions against Ukrainian citizens, like many other decisions of Zelensky, are unconstitutional. Zelensky uses them against anyone in Ukraine who stands for peace. I assumed that a 'treason' charge was being prepared and sanctions could be imposed in connection with my interview with Tucker Carlson. This does not change my position and the position of millions of Ukrainians. For Ukraine to survive, it needs peace, not another dictatorship, even if it is Zelensky's dictatorship," Mendel's response reads.

Iuliia Mendel was Zelensky's press secretary from June 3, 2019, to July 9, 2021. After her dismissal, she made a number of opposing statements about the president and his team. In May, she gave an interview to American journalist Tucker Carlson, saying that Zelensky had offered to "give away" Donbas in negotiations with Russia in 2022.
