Zelensky asked lawmakers to immediately remove Ukraine's Prosecutor General from office

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on September 14 called on members of parliament to support the immediate dismissal of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. This call came amid controversies that arose following major corruption investigations.

Last week, Ruslan Kravchenko resigned following a corruption investigation in his office. No official charges have been brought against him, and he is not currently considered a suspect. However, anti-corruption agencies accuse his subordinate of running a fraudulent scheme.

Over the past year, relations between Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies and other law enforcement bodies have deteriorated sharply. Kravchenko said on September 14 that he had signed a "notice of suspicion" against Semen Kryvonos, the head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). It was this bureau that was conducting the investigation in Kravchenko's office.

Kravchenko accused NABU head Semen Kryvonos of falsifying adoption documents to evade liability. NABU and SAPO (Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office) denied these allegations. They called Kravchenko's statement another systemic attack against independent agencies. They also stated that no official charges had been brought against Kryvonos.

According to Ukrainian law, for the parliament to accept the Prosecutor General's resignation, Zelensky must send an official request. Deputies said the parliament would vote on this matter on September 15.

"There is only one way for the Prosecutor General: to leave his post. I told him so," Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel.

The opposition had accused Kravchenko of attempting to limit the independence of NABU and SAPO in 2025. Kravchenko denied these allegations.

This dispute occurred at a difficult time for Ukraine. The country needs to implement anti-corruption reforms to receive financial assistance from international partners. At the same time, while the war against Russia continues, corruption scandals are negatively affecting Zelensky's public reputation and the trust placed in him.
