Why do the military need Starshield instead of Starlink?
While SpaceX's Starlink network provides satellite internet to the general public, Starshield is designed for the secure communications, intelligence, and surveillance missions of government and military customers. Although they share certain technologies and infrastructure, their rules of use and governance differ.

Why do the military need Starshield instead of Starlink?
Ukraine's statements regarding restrictions placed on satellite communications have once again drawn attention to the differences between these two systems. Kyiv states that the restrictions have complicated the operation of drones and air defense systems.
Elon Musk, meanwhile, stressed that Starlink and Starshield are separate systems. According to him, Starshield systems belong to and are under the control of the US government, and restrictions on their use are determined by the American military or the president.
Starlink is a commercial satellite internet service owned by SpaceX. It is used by households, tourists, shipping companies, and airlines. A special receiver terminal is required to connect to the internet.
The network's first satellites were launched in 2019. Because they operate in low Earth orbit, they allow for reduced signal latency compared to traditional communication satellites positioned at much higher altitudes.
According to Musk's explanation, Starlink is a commercial service controlled by SpaceX that can be used for civilian or defense purposes. He stated that the company does not permit the use of Starlink in offensive military operations.
Starshield, on the other hand, is SpaceX's line of developing satellite systems for government clients, including those in the national security sector. Its tasks are broader than providing internet access, encompassing secure communications, Earth observation, and hosting custom sensors and other equipment on satellites.
According to SpaceX, Starshield relies on the technology and engineering expertise accumulated in creating Starlink. Its secure communication services utilize enhanced encryption, custom terminals, and dedicated network gateways.
At the same time, it is incorrect to understand Starshield merely as a military tariff plan for Starlink. Within the framework of the program, specialized satellites and custom-built systems tailored to specific orders are also developed.
