What will change in the Uzbek Latin alphabet after the adoption of the new law

According to Law No. ZRU-1184 of October 21, 2026, the spelling of a number of letters in the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script will change. The combinations O‘ and G‘ will be replaced by the letters Ö and Ğ, and Sh and Ch by the letters Ş and Ç. As a result, the alphabet will include 28 letters and one apostrophe mark.

At the same time, documents, the national currency, and securities with the old spelling will remain valid. The previous versions of the letters will also be allowed for use in the symbolism of state bodies, on signboards, and on street signs.

The old designations can be left until the wear and tear of the relevant objects or until the end of the period established for the transition to the new rules. The law will come into force six months after its official publication.
