Uzbekistan's power plants are losing share: small generation and households are increasing production

Uzbekistan's Power Plants Lose Share: Small Generation and Households Increase Output

In Uzbekistan, the total volume of electricity production is increasing, but the bulk of the growth is no longer coming from large power plants. For January–July 2026, electricity generation in the country amounted to 52.5 billion kWh — this is 6.4% more than in the same period a year earlier.

At the same time, statistics record a noticeable change in the structure of generation.

According to the National Statistics Committee, for January–July 2026, the country's power plants produced 35.25 billion kWh of electricity. For comparison, in the same period of 2025, this figure was 36.56 billion kWh, and in 2024 — 42.87 billion kWh.

Thus, over two years, electricity generation by large power plants decreased by approximately 17.8%.

At the same time, the total volume of electricity production in the country, on the contrary, continues to grow. This means that the decline in generation by large enterprises is being compensated for by other producers.

Electricity production by small businesses and households, for whom electricity generation is not their main activity, is increasing particularly rapidly.

For January–July 2026, they produced 17.25 billion kWh of electricity.

A year earlier, in the same period, the figure was 12.77 billion kWh, and in 2024 — only 5.04 billion kWh.

In other words, over two years, the volume of such generation has increased more than threefold.

Against this background, the share of small generation in total electricity production is becoming increasingly noticeable. While in 2024 it accounted for about 11.8% of production over seven months, in 2026 it is already about 32.9%.

This is one of the most notable structural shifts in the country's power industry.

Such dynamics may indicate a gradual change in the structure of the energy market: production is becoming less concentrated solely on large power plants, while self-generation by enterprises and households is playing an increasingly significant role.
