Uzbekistan will join the International Electrotechnical Commission standards-setting countries.

Starting January 1, 2027, Uzbekistan will receive full membership status in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), granting it the right to participate in the development and updating of international standards. Uzbekistan will thus become the only Central Asian country with full membership in the IEC.

This information was announced during a meeting between Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov and IEC Secretary-General Philip Metzger. Deepening cooperation in international standardization was a key topic of discussion. Participants discussed training national personnel, involving Uzbek specialists in the work of IEC technical committees, and implementing international standards in the country.

Full membership will give Uzbekistan the opportunity not only to use existing standards but also to actively participate in their creation. Uzbekistan will become the only country in Central Asia with this status.

Uzbekistan's interaction with the IEC began in 2015, when the country joined the Partnership Program. In 2023, Uzbekistan received associate member status. Thus, in less than 12 years, the country has gone from participating in the Partnership Program to achieving full membership.

To date, the IEC has developed over 11,000 international standards, approximately 2,000 of which have already been implemented in Uzbekistan. Promising areas of cooperation include IT, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.

The parties agreed to strengthen the training of national experts and expand their participation in international technical committees. The implementation of standards, as emphasized at the meeting, will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of Uzbek products and opening access to global markets.

As a reminder, the Uzbek Standards Institute has been accepted as a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission's assessment scheme, ensuring the recognition of certificates from Uzbek manufacturers in 53 countries.
