Uzbekistan supports the nomination of Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General

Uzbekistan has approved the candidacy of the Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates and former Permanent Representative of the country to the UN, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, for the position of Secretary-General of the organization.

This was stated in a declaration by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic.

The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the choice of a new leader for the organization is particularly important against the backdrop of intensifying global challenges. The ministry believes that the UN Secretary-General must possess extensive diplomatic experience, high professionalism, and the ability to unite states to resolve international problems.

Among the main tasks of the organization's future leader, the statement listed ensuring international peace and security, as well as achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Lana Nusseibeh has worked in the UAE diplomatic sector since 2009. Over the years, she has headed the Strategic Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, served as the UAE Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and participated in preparing the country for its work within the G20.

In September 2013, Nusseibeh was appointed Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, becoming the first woman to hold this post.

In 2017, the diplomat served as one of the Vice-Presidents of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly and chaired the Executive Board of UN Women.

Prior to her diplomatic career, Nusseibeh worked as a consultant for UNESCO in Paris and as an analyst for the Security and Terrorism Program at the Gulf Research Center.

In October 2026, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan officially nominated her candidacy for the post of UN Secretary-General. Nusseibeh is seeking to succeed António Guterres, whose term of office is coming to an end.
