Uzbekistan intends to fully switch to cashless fare payment on suburban trains and buses

Uzbekistan, Tashkent –

Starting in 2030, Uzbekistan proposes to completely phase out cash payments on suburban passenger trains, as well as on suburban and intercity bus routes. Instead, passengers will have to use cashless payment methods.

This measure is provided for by the draft passenger transport development strategy until 2030. According to the document, currently about 70% of passengers pay for travel in cash.

In addition, starting in 2027, Uzbekistan proposes to introduce a discount of at least 20% on electronic tickets for travel on suburban passenger trains, as well as suburban and intercity buses. This benefit is expected to remain in effect until December 31, 2029. At the same time, there is a inconsistency in dates within the draft: the main text specifies the start of the discount from January 1, 2027, while the action plan states March 1, 2027.

It is also proposed to allow holders of electronic tickets for long-distance trains to use suburban trains within the relevant region free of charge. This option will be available 12 hours before the departure of the long-distance train indicated on the ticket, and for 12 hours after its arrival. The procedure for providing free travel is planned to be developed and implemented by September 1, 2027.

The procedure for providing this option is planned to be developed and implemented by September 1, 2027.

The proposals are contained in a draft document that is currently undergoing public discussion. Therefore, the specified measures have not yet been approved and are subject to change.
