Uzbekistan is studying Chinese technologies for protecting cities from flooding

An Uzbek delegation headed by First Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services Zhalol Arashov is in the Chinese city of Fuzhou, studying modern technologies for rainwater management and urban flood prevention. The trip was organized at the invitation of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the PRC as part of the "World Cities Day 2026" event.

The main objective of the visit is to learn from China's experience in building modern drainage systems and to assess the extent to which such solutions can be applied in Tashkent and other cities of Uzbekistan.

During the program, the delegation visited infrastructure facilities for rainwater collection and drainage, and learned about technologies used within the "Sponge City" concept. This concept provides for the natural absorption, filtration, and accumulation of precipitation in urban areas.

The Chinese side demonstrated the technology of temporary rainwater storage in underground reservoirs with subsequent gradual drainage.

In particular, participants were shown examples of placing such structures beneath car parks, allowing for the efficient use of underground space in dense urban areas.

The delegation also visited a city park where drainage infrastructure is combined with public recreation areas.

Special attention was paid to digital solutions in urban water management.

Participants were shown the capabilities of centralized monitoring, flood risk forecasting, and pipe inspection using robotic cameras. In addition, operational response mechanisms for flood threats and other emergencies were presented.

During the visit, an exchange of views took place with Chinese engineers and designers on the design, construction, and operation of drainage infrastructure.

The studied technologies are planned to be taken into account when preparing proposals for the development of urban drainage systems in Uzbekistan.

Among the outlined objectives are reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall and creating a safe and comfortable urban environment.
