Uzbekistan and the US to strengthen cooperation in nuclear security

Uzbekistan and the United States intend to expand cooperation in the field of nuclear safety when using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The regulatory bodies of the two states signed a memorandum that provides for the exchange of experience, the development of the regulatory framework, and joint work on emergency preparedness issues.

The document was signed during the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the press service of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety reported.

The Memorandum of Understanding was concluded by the Chairman of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Uzbekistan, Abduvakkos Rafikov, and the Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), H.C. Nieh.

The agreement covers a wide range of topics. Among them are radiation and nuclear safety, licensing and inspection control, improvement of legislation and regulatory documents, as well as preparedness for and response to potential emergency situations.

Special attention will be paid to the professional training of specialists. An exchange of experience between experts and the expansion of information interaction between regulatory agencies are planned.

Earlier, Uzbekistan approved the procedure of action in the event of a radiation accident at a nuclear power plant.
