Uzbekistan and Hong Kong discussed transport projects

Uzbekistan and Hong Kong held talks on transport projects.

On August 28, Uzbek Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov met with Nicholas Ho Lik-Chi, Head of the Belt and Road Initiative Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, to discuss expanding cooperation in transport and infrastructure, according to the Uzbek Ministry of Transport.

During the meeting, the parties also considered the possibility of Hong Kong banks participating in financing the construction of the Tashkent-Samarkand toll highway.

The participants discussed the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and China in transport, freight transportation, and infrastructure projects.

Particular attention was paid to the agreements reached in May 2026 following the visit of the Uzbek delegation led by the Prime Minister to Hong Kong. The parties discussed further steps to develop cooperation and implement the agreements reached.

One of the central issues was attracting Hong Kong banks to finance the Tashkent-Samarkand toll road project. Nicholas Ho Lik-Chi emphasized that, of the entire project portfolio, this is a priority for the Hong Kong side.

Furthermore, the parties discussed the prospects of signing an Intergovernmental Agreement on Air Services between Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, specifically the possibility of establishing direct scheduled air service.

Following the talks, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in further deepening cooperation and agreed to continue practical work on promising transport and infrastructure projects.
