US Senators Urge Trump to Reverse Decision to Invite Putin to G20 Summit

Fourteen senators from the US Democratic and Republican parties have asked President Donald Trump to withdraw the invitation sent to Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit, which will be held in Miami in December.

In their letter, the senators noted that Putin bears primary responsibility for Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

"Allowing his participation in the G20 summit held in the US raises serious concerns, as it could normalize relations with a government that daily strikes civilian targets in Ukraine," the letter states.

According to the senators, if Putin is not isolated from the international community, there will be virtually no serious reason left to encourage him to agree to a ceasefire.

The letter was initiated by Republican Senator Roger Wicker and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. In addition to them, the appeal was signed by six other Democratic and six Republican senators.

On September 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States had invited Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami. The Kremlin expressed gratitude for the invitation but stated that a final decision on Putin's travel to the US has not yet been made.

At the end of August, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov attended the summit of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors for the first time since the start of the war. The decision to involve the Russian side in the meeting was made by the Trump administration. The Russian minister's visit caused protests from European delegations.
