The last "Grand Slam" tournament of the year - the US Open - has started in New York. Uzbekistan's number one tennis player Maria Timofeeva (86th in the world ranking) took to the court in the first round against Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (146th in the world ranking).

In the match that lasted 1 hour and 9 minutes, Timofeeva defeated her Slovenian opponent with a score of 6/2, 7/5. The Uzbek athlete achieved a small advantage in aces (2 to 1). Zidansek made 3 double faults.

Maria Timofeeva's opponent in the 1/32 finals will be determined on September 1 in the match between Spaniard Caitlin Quevedo (107th in the ranking) and Belgian Elise Mertens (20).

For information, another Uzbek athlete, Kamilla Rakhimova (92nd in the world ranking), who is participating in the main draw of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, unexpectedly defeated the Czech Barbara Krejcikova, who is ranked 29th in the world ranking, in the first round.

The first set, which was played in an even contest, ended with the victory of Rakhimova with a score of 7:6. She took full control of the second set, winning 6:2 and deciding the match in her favor.

The US Open is the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the season. The competition is held on hard courts and ends on September 13. The total prize fund of the tournament is $ 108 million.

The current winner of the women's singles is Arina Sabalenka from Belarus.
