The United States has sent a survey to NATO countries at a time when it may reduce its military presence in Europe. It asks countries about their level of support for the policies of United States President Donald Trump. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the document.

According to the agency, countries must answer a question about whether they "expressed open sympathy" for US foreign policy. They must also report on restrictions on the use of US military bases and purchases from American defense contractors.

Sources familiar with the situation told the agency that the allies perceived the survey as an attempt to force ideological consensus in exchange for US protection. The agency noted that the survey was compiled against the backdrop of the Trump administration's six-month review of US military presence in Europe. The relevant process is scheduled to be completed in December.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, quoted by Bloomberg, said that the review of the US military presence in Europe is a “logical and positive” decision, given the rising defense spending in Europe and Canada.

A NATO spokesman confirmed to Bloomberg that the alliance is working with the US on a review of the military presence. But he declined to comment on the survey. In July, CNN sources reported that Trump was considering reducing the US military presence by a third as a “signal” to NATO countries.
